Golden Bay 2 - 2013

While staying in a house in Golden Bay, we were given census papers from a friendly local woman who visited us one evening.  We were surprised that we actually had to fill them out for the residence and as individuals.  Census in New Zealand happens in March every 5 years.

Some of the other walks we have done whilst in Golden Bay include Paynes Ford Scenic Reserve, Wainui Falls, and Farewell Spit.  We saw pied and variable oyster catchers, arctic terns, flocks of bar-tailed godwits, Canada geese, lots of seagulls and thousands of black swans in the Farewell Spit Nature Reserve.  You are only allowed to walk to a certain point on Farewell Spit to protect the migrating and nesting birds that make a stop here.

We learned about a great general store/post office (The Langford Store) on the way to the Heaphy Track (one of the Great Walks of NZ).  The store has been a family operation since 1928.   The great-grand daughter of the first owners, who now runs the store, chatted with us as we drank our afternoon tea.  Just down the road, we found Salisbury Falls, a small waterfall and Aorere River gorge.
