Tasman 2 - 2014

While in Wakefield, we looked for day hikes that we could use for exercising.  We returned to Tinline Bay a few times (Fat Tui Cafe veggie burgers after the walk were one of the motivations).  We also found a biking/walking track in Brightwater, the town just north of Wakefield.  Another walk close by is in the Richmond Forest Park.   We are excited about the opening of the Brook Eco Sanctuary in Nelson.  The trails are not finished, but we had a very nice walk through the bush beside the stream there.  Work begins on the predator proof fence in May.  After eradicating all the introduced mammals, threatened species of birds, plants, insects and reptiles will be reintroduced.

Two happy walkers
Our wonderful hosts at Wisteria Cottage, Liam and Annie, invited us to go with them over to their neighbors for a tour of their hop growing and harvesting facilities.  We learned so much about processing the hops for shipment, but the best part was tasting some of the beer on draft.
Freshly picked hops
Cutting down the hop vines
All ready to grow up again for next year
Ready to go up to the drying room
Baled hops ready for shipping
Some bales go to USA to the Coors facility
About 2% of the hops stay in Wakefield to make Totara Beer
Brewery
Though this isn't the usual in all of New Zealand, the Wakefield 4 Square a small local supermarket sells Totara beer on draft.  You can pay for $1 for the bottle or bring your own and fill it.  Self-serve!
Buy your own draft beer at the supermarket
