Buller Region 2014

We made the drive down from Arthur's Pass to sea level - sunnier and certainly warmer.  We are staying in Steeples Cottage on Cape Foulwind,  Captain Cook didn't like the weather (hence the name) but it must not have been summer.

Our host, Pauline and Bruce, invited us and their guest from Toronto, Jim and Audrey, for a walk below the cliffs of Steeples Cottage at low tide.  Their neighbor, Joy, and Deedee, their fun dog, also joined us.  "Make sure you wear shoes you can get wet," was the request.  When in fact, we had to hike up our shorts to wade around one part of our walk.  Bruce and Joy also collected mussels to eat later.  We all gathered for drinks on the deck after our walk.

Cape Foulwind is less than an hour north of Paparoa National Parks.  Beautiful walks there with amazing land formations.

To the north of Cape Foulwind, less than a 2 hour drive is Kahurangi National Park.  The Heapey Track, a 4 to 6 day walk, begins (or ends) here.  We did a very small sample of this very remote Track.
Another drive along a 7 to 8 mile rough forestry road brings you to a series of walks that includes the Oparara Arch, the largest arch in the Southern Hemisphere.  It is almost 700 feet long, 160 feet wide, and over 140 feet above you.
